In a career spanning more than thirty years, Simon Rattle has distinguished himself through his long-term relationships with a number of orchestras, wide-ranging repertoire and innovative educational and audience-building activities. He is Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berliner Philharmoniker, as well as Principal Artist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He is a Founding Patron of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. An exclusive EMI artist for many years, Simon Rattle has made over seventy recordings for the label, and received numerous prestigious international awards. The works on this album will be recorded at the famous Silvesterkonzert (New Year's Concert) on New Year's Eve at the Philharmonie, Berlin. The concert will be televised by major stations in Germany, Austria, Japan and other licensees. The turnaround of this recording will be extremely fast to allow the CD and download to be available in the shops in January. Sir Simon and the BPO follow the example of their 04/05 Silvesterkonzert release of Orff's 'Carmina Burana' by choosing such popular repertoire. Excerpts of the suite have been used in numerous TV programmes and films all over the world, making it instantly recognisable. Together with his numerous educational projects and some of his recent recordings (think Perfume soundtrack and The Planets) this Silvesterkonzert recording is another one which will open the door to classical music to the broader public. Works by Borodin will complement the colourful Pictures at an Exhibition.
