De nalatenschap van de liefhebber-verzamelaar Lambert ten Kate Hermansz. (1674-1731) werd op 16 juni 1723 te Amsterdam geveild. Ze bestond uit zon 550 tekeningen, waaronder schetsen van Rembrandt en Rafaël. In de bijbehorende veilingcatalogus waren alle tekeningen uit zijn verzameling beschreven volgens een door hemzelf gemaakt manuscript. De verkoopcatalogus van Ten Kate is daarmee de vroegst bekende van dien aard. Maar niet alleen dat maakt deze catalogus tot een interessant onderzoeksobject: Ten Kate had aan een groot aantal van zijn tekeningen een aantekening toegevoegd waarin hij zijn persoonlijke waardering en kritiek vastlegde. Bovendien staan bij elke tekening de koper en de prijs vermeld zoals die voorkomen in het exemplaar van de catalogus in de Fondation Custodia te Parijs. Daardoor ontstaat een interessant beeld van het verzamelwezen en de kunstprijzen in de zeventiende en vroege achttiende eeuw. In Kennerschap & de ideale schoonheid.
