The "clear line", a term coined in 1977 by Dutch essayist and artist Joost Swarte, has become shorthand in the field of comics studies for the style originally developed by Hergé and the École de Bruxelles. It refers to certain storytelling strategies that generate a deceptively simple, lucid and hygienic narration: in Philippe Marion'ss words, it is a style "made out of light, fluidity and limpid clarity". By cataloguing and critically analysing clear line comics from historical and theoretical perspectives, this book offers a new outlook on the development of the style in the 20th and 21st centuries, especially focused on the context of the European bande dessinée. In addition, it pioneeringly expands the concept of "clear line" to other artistic domains by introducing and defending its transmedial use, which is particularly relevant for the understanding of the oeuvres of certain filmmakers of the 20th century working in the postwar period, such as Yasujirô Ozu in Japan, Jacques Tati in France and Frank Tashlin in the United States. The Clear Line in Comics and Cinema is therefore a key theoretical work for both bande dessinée enthusiasts and comics scholars, as well as a fundamental contribution to present-day film studies and transmedial narratology.

The Annals of the War in the Low Countries is one of Hugo Grotius's lesser-known works. Grotius expresses a contrarian view of the early revolt, which he presents not as a united battle for the true faith and the ancient liberties of the land but as a protracted and painful struggle, not only with the great power of Spain, but also with discord, selfishness and religious fanaticism among the Dutch. To convey this complex and controversial vision of the foundational years of the Dutch Republic, Grotius chose the worldview and the prose style of the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus as his model. His commissioners, however - the States of Holland - did not publish the work when it was finished in 1612; it appeared in print posthumously in 1657. This is the first edition of Grotius's then-influential and well-known Annals of the Dutch Revolt since its initial publication. It presents a critical edition of the Latin text, a fresh modern English translation, and an introduction which covers all aspects of the work, from its conception to its modern reception, underlining the importance of reason of state for Grotius's thought in general.

Henry of Ghent was the most important thinker of the last quarter of the 13th century and his works were influential not only in his lifetime, but also in the following century and into the Renaissance. This critical edition of Henry of Ghent'ss Summa, art. 60-62 deals with the Trinity. The respective articles are based upon this scholastic philosopher'ss lectures in the theology faculty at the university in Paris and can be dated to slightly after Advent 1290. For Henry and his contemporaries, Trinitarian analysis entailed both metaphysical and epistemological issues which required serious thought and in these articles Henry treats active spiration, a property common to the Father and Son; properties proper to the Holy Spirit; and properties common to all the persons of the Trinity, namely identity, equality, and similitude. Articles 60-62 were distributed by the university in Paris by means of two successive exemplars divided into peciae. Manuscripts copied from each have survived and the text of the critical edition has been established based upon the reconstructed text of these two exemplars. Reconstructing the first exemplar was complicated by the fact that one manuscript contains replacement peciae of the first exemplar and these may have been the models for other manuscript copies. This volume should be of interest to those studying theology, philosophy, and book distribution in the Middle Ages, as well as to scholars of (medieval) teaching at the university in Paris.

Opera Village Africa, a participatory art experiment by the late German multimedia artist Christoph Schlingensief, serves as a testing ground for a critical interrogation of Richard Wagner'ss notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Sarah Hegenbart traces the path from Wagner'ss introduction of the Gesamtkunstwerk in Bayreuth to Schlingensief'ss attempt to charge the idea of the total artwork with new meaning by transposing it to the West African country Burkina Faso. Schlingensief developed Opera Village in collaboration with the world-renowned architect Francis Kéré. This final project of Schlingensief is inspired by and illuminates the diverse themes that informed his artistic practice, including coming to terms with the German past, anti-Semitism, critical race theory, and questions of postcolonial (self-)criticism. From Bayreuth to Burkina Faso introduces the notion of the postcolonial Gesamtkunstwerk to disrupt the Eurocentric perspective on art history, exploring how the socio-political force of a postcolonial Gesamtkunstwerk could affect processes of transcultural identity construction. Peter de Rivo (c.1420-1499), a renowned philosopher active at the University of Leuven, is today mostly remembered for his controversial role in the quarrel over future contingents (1465-1475). Much less known are his contributions to historical chronology, in particular his attempts to determine the dates of Christ'ss birth and death. In 1471, Peter made an original contribution to this long-standing discussion with his Dyalogus de temporibus Christi, which reconciles conflicting views by rewriting the history of the Jewish and Christian calendars.
